Social networking is one of the new ways to market online, and the hottest and most effective ones now are Facebook and Twitter. I personally am preferring Facebook more and more for the different options it gives you such as adding your own articles, videos (yours or someone else you think is worth watching) and the ability to add three urls. With Twitter you are limited to one, and each "tweet" that you send out is limited to 140 characters.
It's quite easy to link the two together, and many twitter users are doing this. So when you say something on twitter it shows up on your Facebook timeline as well.
A great tool to analyze how well you are doing on twitter is Twitalyzer. It will give you a realistic view of what kind of an impact you are making on twitter, and ideas which will really help.
Another good tool is Twittersheep which will give you some ideas as to what your followers would like to hear about.
As always, no matter what social networking sites you use, the most important thing is to add value and something of interest to others. Too many tweets that are mostly irrelevant can lead to many people unfollowing.
